The Keys consist of five groups of islands, including Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys, Key West. Named “Keys” for cayo, the Spanish word for “little island,” the Florida Keys have over 800 keys in all, making it a perfect destination for yacht charters.

Key Largo is the northernmost island and while considered the Diving Capital of the World, this key is a popular destination for those interested in sports fishing yacht charters. The captain can take you to the best spots for catching bonefish, redfish, or tarpon.

North America ’s only living coral barrier reef is in Florida Keys and offers some of the best snorkeling anywhere. Key Largo is also home to many state, national and marine parks and sanctuaries, such as the 50-year-old John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

Key Largo hosts many events that are popular among yacht charter guests.. Upcoming events include the NASCAR Ford Championship on the weekend of November 18, 2012, the FedEx Orange Bowl on January 3, 2012, or the South Beach Food and Wine Festival from February 23rd through the 26th.

Key Largo isn’t the only offshore fishing destination in Florida Keys. Bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, and redfish are all in the shallow waters of the Islamorada backcountry. After you work up an appetite fishing, stop at one of the many eateries to enjoy world-class island cuisine. If you aren’t interested in fishing, don’t pass by this cluster of keys. Spend an afternoon shopping in one of the many boutiques or galleries.

For a family-friendly yacht charter destination, sail to Marathon. This beautiful area has maintained its seafaring roots and traditional Keys culture. Marathon is ideal for those interested in marine and eco-attractions, such as hiking through a preserved tropical hardwood grove at Crane Point or snorkeling at Sombrero Reef. Offshore fishing is popular here, and you can catch billfish, tuna, or dolphin fish, depending on the season.

For a respite from the busy activities on the other keys, sail to Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys. This laid-back and secluded area has some homemade cooking, plenty of unspoiled nature, and an interesting past. Visit the Underwater Music Festival at Looe Key and the National Key Deer Refuge, which features a diminutive breed of deer only found in the Florida Keys. Just before sunset, sail out to the uninhabited Saddlebunch Keys where you can get a spectacular view of the setting sun.

The most well-known of Florida Keys, Key West, is more awake after the sun goes down. It seems as if the whole population gathers at Mallory Dock every evening to celebrate the Sunset Celebration. Choose from casual eateries to fine dining, dive bars to legendary pubs, and everything in between. There is no lack of entertainment as the streets fill with jugglers, mimes, musicians, and street artists. Key West is a very popular destination for yacht charters because of its vibrant atmosphere.

Daylight hours offer a completely different type of atmosphere, where yacht charter guests can enjoy outdoor activities, including diving, fishing, golfing, and water sports. The city has a storied past, which can be seen in its architecture and harbors, such as Key West Bight, a historic seaport district that has been renovated.

Key West is as popular among celebrities of today almost as much as in the past. The island was a favorite vacation spot for politicians, writers, sports heroes and more, including Thomas Edison, Harry Truman, Tennessee Williams, Lou Gehrig, Ernest Hemingway and John Audubon.
