Experiencing Miami by boat is an adventure that should be recreated again and again, with different activities and itineraries each time!
Kayaking
Kayaking is a popular Miami water activity, which allows guests to feel the serenity of the ocean, see dolphins jumping nearby, and appreciate the stunning Miami cityscape. Just 20 minutes from downtown Miami is the Oleta River State Park. Kayak through the many channels of calm waters through the mangroves. You can also paddle to the Gables waterways at Matheson Hammock Park, where you’ll have an outstanding view of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline.
Scuba Diving
Miami is home to the only tropical coral reef of a major continental U.S. city. The barrier reef stretches south through the Florida Keys and offers an amazing natural dive site in comfortable warm waters. Additionally, the area is known as the “Wreckreational Dive Capital of the World,” with many artificial sites having been formed here starting as early as the 1920s.
Some of the best dive sites in Miami include:
- Emerald Reef: Located just off Key Biscayne, this natural patch reef lies in 10 to 20 feet of water and includes hard corals, gorgonians, sponges, grunts, and barracuda.
- Half Moon: An ideal location for novice divers, the two-masted schooner sunk in 1930’s during a storm outside of Key Biscayne. Her intact hull draws numerous juvenile fish and inshore species.
- Neptune Memorial Reef: This mausoleum was built as a final resting place for those who wish to have their cremated remains placed in an artificial reef. It sits in 40-50 feet of water and resembles the lost city of Atlantis.
- Ophelia Brian: Intentionally sunk on December 30, 1999, this 210-foot freighter has a maximum depth of 110 feet and attracts plenty of marine life.
- Wreck Trek: Lying just off the shores of Miami Beach, this line of artificial reefs consists of radio towers, army tanks, barges, and other rubble. Located in about 50 feet of water, you’ll experience an array of marine life.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is an easy way to enjoy the amazing and unique ecosystem just beneath the water at Miami Beach. The third largest barrier reef in the world is located just off the pristine beaches and numerous artificial reefs abound. You’ll see vibrant colors, such as the yellow and red coral canyons and purple sea fans. Tropical fish in the area include yellowtail snapper, parrotfish, angelfish, blue tang, grouper, and hogfish. You may also spot dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, nurse sharks, and stingrays.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of experiencing Miami on the water on a private luxury yacht charter is the vast quantity of marinas. The best marinas often have mega yachts docked at their piers and a restaurant for dining while enjoying the view. Enjoy fresh seafood and a tropical drink before heading back out to sea on your unforgettable yacht charter vacation.
